"God actually delights in exalting our inability. He intentionally puts His people in situations where they come face to face with their need for Him...He divinely orchestrat[es] the events of His people so that in the end only He could get the glory for what would happen...He puts His people in positions where they are desperate for His power, and then He shows His provision in ways that display His greatness."
my first thought was that's a really shitty thing to do.
I'm guessing this is from the bible somewhere and I often have problems with that weighty tome.
But just imagine for a moment someone with a higher authority or a higher position than you did that. Like I dunno a dictator.
I picked that title because I've just had the belabored pleasure of writing about one for 15 exhaustive pages and as I read this quote I instantly thought of him.
I have no issue with God or the belief in God but this message just seems all wrong. It seems petulant and childish and stupid. When I'm facing tough times I'm not thinking God has created this for me to overcome, just like I don't think God caused 9/11 or Hurricane Katrina for the same reasons.
If this were how I saw my God then I would repeat:
that's a really shitty thing to do.
Just saying.
P.S. I totally just looked up where this came from and it seems to be some self righteous bible thumper. I admit I don't know anything about this guy and I'm thinking I'm glad I don't. But maybe I'm wrong. Anyone know more about this?
As it stands, I reiterate.
That's a really shitty thing to do and a really shitty message to spread!
So which part is shitty¿ Is it the age old question "why do bad things happen to good people?" kind of shitty or the dictator type behavior overload shitty...to me it (just breathe deeply here) it sort of sounds like good parenting. How does iron ore become strong, sharp, useful and shiney? Mine it, beat it, burn it, freeze it, repeat until desired strength is achieved. Otherwise its dirt, unrefined, covered by darkness. People are not born refined. Its a painful process. Whoever designed this method has not much to do with the fact that, here in the real world, the good part comes after it sucks out loud. And who wrote that drivel anyway?
ReplyDeleteYou read way more than I did or maybe you're pulling on further knowledge of what this quote means. I get where you're coming from and agree, people who rise and overcome are stronger, but this guy with this interpretation is I think a shitty thing to do to people. I guess its his wording. He's set God up as a self aggrandizing being manipulating people for the expressed purposes that they must rely on him and him only and in order to accomplish that goal God will put his people is situations that will make them desperate to believe in him. And then after he's made all these horrible things happen he gets the glory of the people who have turned to him. I don't like that. I don't want to be desperate in order to believe in God. I don't want the idea of him manipulating my circumstances so that I'll believe in him. I tried looking up the quote and it took my to some book, not so radical by David Platt. I guess he's the guy.
